After announcing the development of the 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD (Model A058) for Nikon Z-mount in July, Tamron has announced the new zoom lens, setting the MSRP at $1,999 and availability starting on September 21, 2023. This zoom lens is familiar, as the company released a version for Sony E-mount back in 2021. However, it will be one of Tamron’s first for Nikon’s Z-mount mirrorless system alongside the 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD. Tamron states this will be the world’s first Z-mount zoom lens to have a maximum aperture of F2.

As mentioned, the 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD was first released for Sony E-mount a few years ago, and the lens was a hit among readers. The lens offered excellent sharpness and CA control, and it’s corrected for focus breathing, making it a solid choice for video. Despite the versatile wide-to-telephoto zoom range and notably bright aperture range, the Tamron 35-150mm was surprisingly compact for this type of lens, with good ergonomics and solid build quality.

Optically, the Z-mount version is identical to the earlier Sony E-mount model, featuring 21 elements in 15 groups and includes four LD (Low Dispersion) and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements. Given the excellent optical performance of the E-mount version, we can expect similar results with the Z-mount model. The lens features a 9-bladed circular aperture diaphragm, with minimum apertures narrowing down to F16-F22. Despite using the same optical design, the Nikon Z-mount version is ever-so-slightly heavier than the Sony E-mount version, weighing in at 1,190g (2.62 lbs.) compared to 1,165 g (2.57 lb) for the E-mount model.

As before, the focusing system is powered by Tamron’s VXD linear motor for quiet, quick and responsive focusing performance. The lens has a minimum objective distance of 0.33m (13in) at 35mm and 0.85m (33.5in) at 150mm, translating to a magnification ratio of 1:5.7 on the wide end and 1:5.9 at full telephoto.

The Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 is a uniquely versatile lens, with all the key focal lengths for travel, events and portraiture all combined into a single lens. And despite the all-in-one design, you also get wonderfully fast apertures as well. It makes for an enticing option for Nikon Z-mount owners looking for a sharp, high-quality and fast single-lens solution for events, portraiture, all-around shooting, as well as video.
